Should You Mount Your TV Above the Fireplace? Pros, Cons & Solutions

Mounting a TV above the fireplace is one of the most requested installations we do in Naples — and one of the most debated topics in home design. The fireplace is the natural focal point, so it makes sense to combine it with your TV. But there are legitimate concerns about viewing angle and heat damage.

The viewing angle problem is real: when your TV is mounted 5-6 feet high above a mantle, you're looking up at a steep angle that causes neck strain during long viewing sessions. The solution? A MantelMount or similar pull-down tilting mount that lets you lower the TV to eye level when watching and push it back up when not in use.

Heat is the other concern. Gas and wood-burning fireplaces can generate significant heat that rises directly behind a wall-mounted TV. We always recommend a heat deflector shelf above the mantle and checking the wall temperature with an infrared thermometer. If the wall exceeds 100 degrees F, the TV should not be mounted there without a recessed niche or heat management solution.

For electric fireplaces — which are increasingly popular in Naples condos and new construction — heat is rarely an issue. The heat output is minimal and directed forward, not upward, making above-fireplace mounting perfectly safe.
